QUESTION 62: A car accelerate uniformly from rest at 4 ms-². How far will it travel in the fifth complete second? A. 100 m B. 50m C. 32 m D. 18 m JAMB 2009(5) Ans: D

Solutions

Initial velocity u= 0

Using S = ut + ½at²

S = ½ at², since U = 0

Let S⁵ = distance in 5 seconds

S⁵ = ½ x 4 x 52

S⁵ = 2 x 25

S⁵ = 50m

S⁴ = distance covered in 4 seconds

S⁴ = 1/2 x 4 x 42

S⁴ = 2 x 16

S⁴ = 32m

Distance covered in the fifth second

S⁵ - S⁴ = 50m - 32m = 18m
