QUESTIONS 6. If a car starts from rest and moves with a uniform acceleration of 10m/s2 for ten seconds, the distance it covers in the last one second of motion is

A. 95m B. 100m C. 500m D. 905m E. 1000m

JAMB 1985 Ans: 95m

SOLUTIONS

  • Initial velocity= u = 0m/s
  • Acceleration= a = 10m/s²
  • Time = t = 10s
  • Distance (s) covered in the last one second = between 9seconds and 10 seconds

S = S10 - S9

S10 = ut + ½at²10 but ut = 0 Therefore S10 = ½at²10

S9 = ut + ½at²9 but ut = 0 Therefore S9 = ½at²9

Therefore  S = S10 - S9

S = ½at²10 - ½at²9

S = ½a (t10² - t9²)

S = ½ x 10 (10² - 9²)

S = ½ x 10 (100-81)

S = 10/2 (19)

S = 5(19)

S = 95m
