QUESTIONS 8: A force, 10N drags a mass 10kg on a horizontal table with an acceleration of 0.2m/s². If the acceleration due to gravity is 10m/s², the coefficient of friction between the moving mass and the table is?

A. 0.02

B. 0.08

C. 0.20

D. 0.80

Ans: 0.08 JAMB 1988

SOLUTIONS

μmg = ma

F = μR

R = mg

F = μmg

R = F - P

μmg = F - ma

μ x 10 x 10 = 10 - (10 x 0.2)

100 μ =10 - 2

dividing both sides by 100

μ = 8 / 100

μ = 0.08

Or

F -Fr = umg

where F is applied force

fr is d frictional force

Fr = ma

F - ma = umg

10 - 10 × 0.2 = 10 × 10×u

8 = 100μ

μ = 0.08
